Wind energy technology has come a long way. Wind turbines are much bigger, efficient, and effective. According to a New York Times article, one model of wind turbine made by Vestas (Danish turbine manufactures) produces 300 time as much as energy compared to a turbine sold 15 years ago. As of now, the biggest wind onshore turbine produces approximately 7.5-megawatt electricity and made by the German company Enercon. To put this alternative energy production in perspective please know that we need 2 megawatt to meet the power needs of about 250 homes in the United States. Acciona (a Spanish company interested in sustainability) is planning to build a 144MW wind farm in South Australia. The project would be located 15km from Naracoorte in the south-east of the state and the company might be able to start building the project in 2013.
