Volkswagen Develops Crowd-Sourced All-Electric Hover Car Concept

Written by Megan Treacy on 08/05/12

As part of its People's Car Project (PCP) in China, Volkswagen has developed a concept car based on a crowd-sourced idea for an all-electric hover car that it will debut at the Beijing Auto Show.

The car is a two-person city car that hovers above the ground and travels via electromagnetic roadways. The Hover Car looks a lot like a flattened fish bowl with its circular design and large glass panels. Simon Loasby, Head of Design at Volkswagen Group China, said "The creative ideas from the ‘People's Car Project' give us a valuable insight into the wishes of Chinese drivers. The trend is towards safe cars that can easily navigate overcrowded roads and have a personal, emotional and exciting design."

A 2.1-megawatt (MW) off-grid solar project will be constructed in the northern region of Tibet called Naqu. This will be the largest off-grid solar installation built in the area in years. (Smaller solar power stations were built in the Chamdo region in 2002.) Building off-grid systems may be favorable for such areas, due to the ruggedness of the terrain and large distances between population centers.

Not that long ago, some folks were arguing that clean energy — unlike climate change, which had been irredeemably stained by partisanship (eww!) — would bring people together across ideological lines. Persuaded by the irrefutable wisdom of wonks, we would join hands across the aisle to promote common-sense solutions. It wouldn’t be partisan, it would be … post-partisan.

Electricity consumers are participating in net-metering programs in growing numbers. When individuals or businesses install small onsite generators (such as a rooftop solar system), they can usually enter into a net-metering agreement with their utility. Between 2003 and 2010, the average annual growth in customer participation was 56%, with a 61% increase between 2009 and 2010. While participation is increasing, electric customers with net metering represented only 0.1% of all customers in 2010.

(The research team didn’t include decentralized, off-grid wind turbines and photovoltaic power in this study but will do so in a future study.)

“The shoe apparently has a very thin ‘crystal chip,’ perhaps a piezoelectric device, that generates power when the sole bends. It can charge phones via a long cable to a pocket while the user walks, or store power for later charging,” Tim Hornyak of cnet writes.

As someone in love with 3rd-generation bike-sharing systems before the large majority of Americans knew anything about them, I’ve been eagerly anticipating and covering NYC’s huge bike-sharing plans for years. This could transform NYC. Bike sharing did so in Paris, and NYC’s program is to be a similar size. Additionally, biking in NYC has been booming under the leadership of Janette Sadik-Khan (Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation), see there’s a flame to be fueled with this new program.

In spite of some headwinds from natural gas, there remain some opportunities for green-energy investors. But selecting investments in the current market will be challenging. For example, First Solar (FSLR), a photovoltaics company that was trading at $129/share last summer, was trading around $18 in May. Similarly, Vestas Wind Systems (VWDRY), a wind turbine manufacturer, has seen its stock plummet from $11.5 to less than $3. While stock price does not directly affect a company’s operations, it can hamper its ability to secure operational loans and drive up interest rates on its bonds.

Architecture is always finding itself. From the Romans to the Renaissance, and from Wright to what used to be Modern – it’s always “Towards a New Architecture.” Great architecture is far more than fashion, but in recent times, surface trends with wincing names like “Post-Modernism” were casting desperately for that old spark. Well, it’s back – to stay. Carbon-neutral building will drive architecture increasingly into the future, fired by a purpose deeper and more acute than ever before — the preservation of civilization itself.
