Exploring Wind Energy India
Wind Energy India is a growing sector of renewable energy source. According to Indian Wind Energy Association (IWEA), the wind energy sector in India is ranked 5th in the world and has an installed capacity of approx. 14,000 megawatt energy. Therefore, wind energy India is beginning to play a key role in the global renewable energy market. Why wind power India has a huge potential? One would need a constant supply of wind energy to produce sustainable energy from this renewable energy source. Wind energy production in India is favored by the following factors: 1) In May-June, due to strong southwest summer monsoon, cool, humid air moves towards the land. 2) In October, due to the weaker northeast winter monsoon, cool, dry air moves towards the ocean. 3) Between March- August, the winds are uniformly strong over the whole Indian Peninsula, except the eastern peninsular coast. 4) Between November- March, wind speeds are relatively weak in other parts of country except Tamil Nadu coastline where higher winds are available. Therefore, there has been a lot of interest in this renewable energy source and the industry has grown significantly in the last decade or so.
Various agencies such as
Center for Wind Energy Technology (C-WET)
are beginning to offer education and training in various technical aspects of wind industry are beginning to offer education and training in various technical aspects of wind industry.

These educational skills can offer green job opportunities in the fast developing renewable energy sector There are various state and central agencies that are responsible for leading the country in research and development as well as policy development. One such agency is the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The Ministry is responsible coordinating the development of all forms of alternative energy (including wind energy). According to Indian Wind Energy Association (IWEA), the central government has offered both fiscal and policy incentives to encourage the growth of wind energy India. Some of these incentives are listed below: • Generation-Based incentives of Rs. 0.50/kWh • Concessional import duty on specified wind turbine parts. • 80% accelerated depreciation in the first year • Excise duty reliefs • Loans through IREDA • Income Tax holiday applicable to wind power as in the case of power projects

It is important to know that as of now various state governments (Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal) have developed and approved master plans for 97 potential sites for wind energy development. Wind energy companies will play a big role in bringing in the technological know-how and implementing some of these projects.

The master plans provide detailed information on the following and allows for access to critical information for successful implementation of wind energy projects: • Grid availability • Land availability • Availability of wind data • Accessibility to the installation site Therefore, wind energy India is definitely worth exploring not only for investments purposes but also from the perspectives for job growth, energy access to rural areas, and overall economic, environmental, and social well being of the nation.
