Information on Solar Panels, Solar farms, and Solar Energy Panels !!!

Solar Panels are the primary devices that allows us to tap solar energy for electricity generation. Solar energy panels can be installed in large groups and called solar farms. These solar farms actually can support residential as well as commercial settings.

As an example, did you know that Denver International Airport (DIA) , Colorado (United States) generates and uses more solar power than any other commercial airport in the United States. One would of-course need a lot of land to install these solar farms. DIA has these solar panel installations in 45 acres of farmland near the airport. With the last round of solar collector panels, the airport has increased its solar power capacity to more than 8 megawatt from its earlier capacity of 4.4 MW which meets about 6 % of its total energy use. This is the third solar project for the DIA. The first two installations were for 2-MW and 1.4-MW, respectively. The airport has signed a 20-years deal with a utility company who owns the solar photovoltaic (PV) system installed at DIA and sells electricity to the airport.

Therefore, alternative energy solar as an energy option is definitely worth exploring as it is not only becoming cheaper to use the technology but also more efficient.

Solar energy information | Solar panels overview

What are Solar Energy Panels?

Solar energy panels are comprised of solar cells connected electrically and packaged together as a module. These modules are technically called solar energy panels and when they are grouped into large solar arrays, they are called solar farms.

So how do solar cells generate alternative energy from solar energy? They use photovoltaic (PV) cells which are comprised of of semiconductors such as silicon. When light energy strikes a solar cell, it is absorbed and transferred to the semiconductor materials. The electric fields in the PV cells makes the electrons move by light absorption. As we know, flow of electrons creates electricity which in this case can be tapped by placing metal contact on the top and bottom of the PV cell therefore creating power (or wattage) for everyday use.

One get formal training and education to become more familiar with this technical information. Click here for more information if you are interested in getting solar energy education and get the necessary skills and training in this field.

So what are the different types of solar panels?

Materials presently used for photovoltaic solar cells include:

Monocrystalline silicon and polycrystalline silicon:

There are pros and cons of investing in each kind of materials. From price perspective, Monocrystalline panels are more expensive but they are most efficient at (14-18 % return electricity rate) compared to polycrystalline silicon panels with 12-14 % return rate. However, the second category is also the cheapest in terms of cost and also has a low maintenance cost.United States Department of Energy data however shows that multicrystalline solar panels sold more than the monocrystalline silicon sales.

Amorphous silicon:

Amorphous silicon panels have the lowest electricity rate (5 -6%) but are very cheap to produce since they are made up of semi conductive metal such as copper with a thin silicon film covering the material. They are definitely cheaper to start with but are not cost effective for home use in the long run.

Cadmium telluride:This technology has the lowest thin-film module price however there are concerns of toxic(cadmium) being released.

Copper indium selenide/sulfide:This technology has the highest efficiency (~20%) among thin film materials but is currently not price effective compared to other thin film materials.

One could explore the possibility of solar energy careers after getting solar energy education and acquiring the necessary training and skills.

Therefore, getting information on solar panels can enable one to explore options to use alternative energy solar alternative as an energy source for residential or commercial purpose.
