Renewable Energy China and Alternative Energy in China
Renewable Energy China is allowing the country to meets its energy demands to keep pace with the economic growth. Last December, China announced that it would be building a 1-GW solar PV plant, the largest in the world at time. Soon after that California announced a plan for a 1.3-GW solar project which would have been the largest plant in the world. However, China recently revealed that it now plans to build a 2-GW solar PV plant in the Mongolian Desert, the world's largest by far. Is China leading the global race in generating alternative energy? China intends to use
wind renewable energy,
in addition to
solar alternative energy,
and biomass energy to contribute to about 8% of its electricity generation by 2020 (compared to 4% in China and United States currently). According to the newspaper Guardian, By 2020, the government is committed to raising the share of renewable energy (excluding hydroelectric power) in the energy mix to 6%, from the current 1.5%. Is is now known that China has left behind its competitions such as United States, Denmark, Germany, and Spain in wind renewable energy and has become the largest manufacturer of solar panels in the world. So, why is China able to make its commitment to tap into green energy?

One of the reasons is that its domestic demand for electricity is rising 15 % each year compared to a mature electricity market in the United States and other western nations. Therefore, the Chinese government has started to explore the alternative energy sources in China. This allows for opportunities to create market prices in alternative energy in China competitive and comparable to fossil-fueled-fired coal and other power plants. Solar Energy in China is emerging as a promising field.

This commitment is still 20-40% expensive than the existing coal-fueled power but the Chinese government is able to compensate the difference by charging a renewable energy fee to all electricity users. This fee is higher for commercial users compared to residential users but the fee is able to pay the companies that operate the electric grid and make up the difference between alternative energy and fossil-fueled energy. This fast-paced growth in wind energy industry has also created a lot of
green jobs opportunities.
According to Chinese Renewable Industries Association, green industry jobs have reached 1.12 million and it continues to add 100,000/year. Therefore, renewable energy China is worth exploring in terms of making investments and alternative energy technologies growth.
