What are alternative energy careers or green jobs ? These career options include jobs in industries that make the world "green" or environmentally friendly. These careers allows one to make a living as well a create sustainable land and living places. The green industry jobs range from renewable energy conservation, green construction, and resource management. These job opportunities are found in varied fields as environmental protection, waste reduction, green buildings, sustainable agriculture, and sustainable energy and energy efficiency. As an example, according to the American Solar Energy Society’s 2007 report, “green industries already generate 8.5 million jobs in the U.S., and with appropriate public policy, could grow to as many as 40 million jobs by 2030 .” A recent New York Times article noted that “56,000 newly trained workers and 14,000 project managers would be needed to realize [President] Obama’s one-year goals for energy efficiency alone.” A new report by the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings, provides additional information assessing the current nature, size, and growth of the clean economy and alternative energy career options in U.S. regions. Here are the major findings from the report: 1) The clean economy, which employs some 2.7 million workers, encompasses a significant number of jobs in establishments spread across a diverse group of industries. 2) The clean economy is manufacturing and export intensive. 3) The clean economy offers more opportunities and better pay for low-skilled workers than the national economy as a whole. 4) Most of the country’s clean economy jobs and recent growth concentrate within the largest metropolitan areas. 5) Among regions in the United States, the South has the largest number of clean economy jobs though the West has the largest share relative to its population. As the report writers indicate, "Fueled by innovation and private-sector entrepreneurship, numerous clean economy industries—particularly in the cleantech space— have emerged from the recent financial crisis and are progressing rapidly along relevant technology, cost, and employment measures".

Some of these jobs require vocational skills such as solar design, solar panel installation, and other energy-efficient building installations.
Wind energy jobs require one has to have technical skills do the job of a wind turbine machinist, wind turbine builder, and wind energy technicians. Most of the training for these skill sets can be obtained by enrolling in green energy certification programs in community colleges and technical schools.
